I just joined the Giant Watermelon Growers Club. I hope to enter the contest next year. Their website says that the watermelon must be weighed at a GPC site worldwide. I went to the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth website, and I saw the weigh-off locations. There are no weigh-off sites in VA listed on the website, and I was wondering if I would be able to weigh it at the VA State Fair where they weigh pumpkins and watermelons each year. Thanks!

John, I am sorry but unless the rules are changed you will have to drive your melons to a GPC weigh-off if you want to compete for a club prize.

You can start a site for 100$ with GPC!

I think you could weight it with a certified scale yourself and have a few growers verify it. That is what they do with giant tomatoes, then it counts as a entry into the nearest GPC weigh-off location in the fall.

You must take to a GPC site For sure nip only cantalope and tomatoes you can take to certified scales because they are hard to predict when they ripen.

As a mater person... we're working on those rules. :)
You could always ask the people running your state fair to join up and become a GPC site...

sirpumpkin, unless rules have changed in the last few days, and I missed it...tomatoes are the only early weigh off item!!! Several folks are hoping that cantalopes get included in that category, but has not happened yet, as far as I know!!! Peace, Wayne
