            | uncle pumpking | Chagrin Falls,Ohio,USA | I have had only 2 females on th e main vine both with 4 lobes . But there are several 5 lobes on side vines. What is the pro and con on choosing the main or the side vine? Also if a side vine is a choice is a further up sidevine better than a closer in to the stump ?

 Thanks

            | Jordan Rivington (JRO) | Windsor, Ontario, Canada | A 4, 5, or 6 lobe on main trumps any secondary. The only times when you should pick a secondary is if you have no choice...really bad vine position, little to no growth, or other major issues. | 7/22/2008 2:47:30 PM |
            | ghopson | Denver, CO | Several world record pumpkins are 4 lobes on the main vine, but off-hand I dont know of any world record type pumpkin grown on a side vine, even with a 5 lober. Jordan has it right, dont take the side vine except when you have no main to go with. And yes, if you had to go with a side vine, the farther down the plant the side vine is, the better.
