is it normal practice to cut every other secondary or to let each one grow? if I leave them will there be enough room to get in there to weed and trim?

Darren, I have let them grow. Especially on a limited sized patch I would try to get as much as possible greenery which could produce sugars for the pumpkin. I didn´t have to get into the plant areas for weeding, because the leaf canopy was pretty dense and the weeds didn´t like it that dark. With a watering system (hope you got it fixed) you also don´t need to get into the plants for watering, and leaving the plants alone for a while helps avoid soil compaction. Will let all secondaries grow again this year.

I let all mine grow in a 300 sq foot patch.i will also angle the secondaries back towards the stump to give me a little more length on my secondaries.

I'd let them all go now and make the call once the leaves are full size. A lot depends on the genetics and leaf size. I didn't have to cut any last year, but I had medium size leaves on all 3 plants and had adequate air flow which is a big factor in preventing disease.
