Hello people. First post and first year at trying for a giant. I bought seeds from H. Dill and ordered two books but I have a question on how to tell which way the vine will grow. I would like to plant on the east edge of my garden and have the main vine running west.... Any advice...? Thanks alot

opposite of the 1st true leaf is a good rule of thumb

The main vine will grow in the opposit direction of the first true leaf! (not the cot leafs) it's the next leaf that grows out! Hope this helps! Randy

You will get the first two leafs, cots, a third-the main vine will grow opposite side of the 3rd leaf.

Ok sweat that helps a bunch. I was wanting to experiment with three different plants and do one indirect and the other two direct planting but I might have to change my thinking.

Hi shawnc, as to direct planting experiments I have done some tests aiming at the direction of the first true leaf with respect to the seed direction. The result is the following: AG seeds (most of them) have a tip on the pointy end (i.e., the baseline of the pointy end, which has to face down when you plug the seed, has a skew). That side of the pointy end which reaches further down will most likely be the side of the future growth direction (i.e., the opposite side, the side which doesn´t reach that far down, will most likely be the side of the first true leaf). If you have alot of seeds available for germination tests, I recommend you just try to plug some test seeds in a particular direction and see in which direction the first true leaf will face. Anyway, even if this worked out with 100% probability, the direct planting still has a disadvantage: You cannot set the plant into the patch in a particular angle (planting in an angle of about 45 deg. will help reduce strain on the stem when the vine is starting to run). Have fun!

Thanks Pumking. I never imagined there could be so much to learn about growing AG. The more I learn the more I am confussed and MORE questions... Thanks...
