2 inches apart? The vines will easily be 2" in diameter )in most cases) by the end of June. I feel you would get more from one healthy plant than two that are struggling to occupy the same space.

I wouldn't plant tomato plants 2" apart much less pumpkins. These plants have roots that will travel 10 or more feet out in all directions.

So really, we should dig out a 20 foot area in our patch to give the roots enough room? How deep should we dig out( clay soil)?
