I wanted to share a quick update on one of my most exciting watermelons this season. I made a cross between my Moon & Stars (yellow flesh, long) as the seed parent and pollinated it with a 276 McCaslin. The fruit really took off and started putting on serious size around July 10th. As of today, it is already weighing in at a minimum of 10 kg (over 22 lbs)! I am really happy with this growth rate so far. But the most fascinating part for me is the phenotype. Even though the mother plant is a classic Moon & Stars with dark green skin and those iconic yellow spots, this melon has clearly inherited the distinct stripes from the 276 McCaslin father. It is always amazing to watch the genetics express themselves in the patch. Because this F1 cross is already showing such interesting traits, it's safe to say that the F2 seeds from this melon will likely throw some completely unpredictable and wild results in the next generation. It will be a total lottery to see what they produce! I'll keep you all updated on its progress. Good luck to everyone with your seasons, and keep them growing!
